Inter-Assoc match a huge success!

The HTA was involved in the inaugural inter-association match against Great Southern Tennis Association on Sunday, Feb 22nd. Despite the very warm weather, the match was a wonderful opportunity to play against new people and to make new contacts and friends. Great Southern organised a perpetual trophy – the Ian Barry Esky Trophy. Ian was a highly successful player in the Great Southern Assoc for many years – winning premierships, club championships etc. But now the HTA is claiming him as one of ours! His success has continued with us – his most recent bragging point is being part of the Hills Country Carnival Div 1 Men’s winning side. Ian also contributes greatly to our Association – he is currently the Junior Activities Chairperson.

Unfortunately for the Hills, we underestimated the strength, depth and skills of the Great Southern side. HTA went down big time – scoring only 4 sets, 96 games to Great Southern’s massive 26 sets, 173 games. A big congratulations to Dan Anderson, Mandy Saward, David Sandell, Jess Lang, Abbey Geue and Hayley Edwards who kept the Hills side alive and managed to score one set a piece off the strong opposition. Special mention needs to go to our number 2 women’s player Rebecca Smith (pictured below) who won both of her sets played on the day! Great effort guys!

All who were present on the day would agree that it was a fabulous day. From an organiser’s point of view it was great to see people who would normally play AGAINST each other, being put in the position of being team mates and playing WITH each other – the bonding of Hills players, new insights and understandings into each other and forging of new friendships was wonderful to see. The HTA have got some making up to do next year! We are already planning the timing and composition of the event next year and the we aim to seek revenge by recruiting more higher end Div 1 players.

So, for the time being, the Ian Barry Esky Trophy for the event is in the hands of Great Southern Tennis Association. It is our mission to bring it back where it belongs next year….. can’t wait!

HTA Results – 2015 Senior Country Carnival

News  Comments Off on HTA Results – 2015 Senior Country Carnival
Feb 082015

Congratulations to all the HTA participants in the Carnival, the HTA contributed approximately half of the total number of participants and congratulations to all HTA players is deserved.

Thank you very much also to the Senior Activities Committee for their help in organising the senior HTA campaign.

Senior Country Carnival Report 2015

The HTA was again strongly represented at a senior level at Tennis SA’s Country Carnival this year, with 2 Men’s teams, 3 Women’s teams and 3 Mixed teams. HTA Div 1 Men’s team, comprising of Anthony Klatt, Dave Mullins, Scott Hughes, Ian Barry, Paul Juzulenas and Phil Smith again took out their division – congratulations boys!

Dylan Davey’s Mixed team achieved 3rd place in an event that had 11 competitive teams from the various regions of SA.

While other teams may not reached the top of their division, all Hills teams were competitive and enjoyed the social atmosphere of the Carnival.

A number of seniors also played in the individual tournament events. Scott Hughes would be feeling rather pleased with himself, not only winning the team event above, but also taking out the Individual Men’s Singles and then going on to win the Men’s Doubles with partner Dave Mullins (who also finished equal 3rd in the singles event). What an achievement Scott!

Talent obviously runs in the Hughes family, as Olivia, paired with Lower Murray player Tracy Loechel won the Women’s doubles event, and also won both the 16 & Under Girls singles and doubles events! Younger sister Madeline also excelled in her 12 & Under Girls events, taking out both singles and doubles titles.

Regardless of the end results, all players enjoyed the week of tennis.

HTA Results – 2015 Junior Country Carnival

News  Comments Off on HTA Results – 2015 Junior Country Carnival
Feb 082015

The 2015 Country Carnival was one of HTA’s most successful in Juniors. We were successful in winning 6 titles (Division 1 in all 12, 14, 16

competitions) and runner up in a further 5 divisions. All up 26 teams competed from the HTA and we were also awarded The John Fitzgerald Shield for our strong commitment to the tournament. The weather was a small dampener to the week’s matches with cancellations but the players did play some tennis, whether it was on lawn, hard court or clay and it was a great experience.

Thank you to all participants, winners and to the JAC and helpers who made this a fabulous and landmark winning year for the HTA.

Results – 2015 HTA Junior Closed Tournament

News  Comments Off on Results – 2015 HTA Junior Closed Tournament
Feb 082015

Firstly, to plan, organise and run this Tournament of this calibre is only possible due to the hard work and effort on the part of the Junior Activities Committee (JAC) and others. Congratulations to all the participants and particular congratulations to the winners but also a very big acknowledgement of appreciation to the JAC etc.

Just under a 100 junior tennis players converged at Hahndorf for the Hills Closed Junior Tournament on the January long weekend. In perfect weather conditions, quality tennis was played by the many talented young players we are lucky to have in the Hill Tennis Association. Players nominated for singles, doubles and mixed doubles, the latter being a new format to many young players and resulted in some exciting finals on the last day. First round losers in the singles also went into a Consolation tournament draw. The tournament was run by HTA juniors Hayley Edwards, Rebecca and Jacqueline Smith after training with Tennis SA and they did a great job.
